I thought that I had just one ship that had the ability to separate the saucer section from the engineering section; the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-D. Then I was exploring all that I have installed to a Runtime Library for DAZ Studio and Poser, looking to use one I had not yet used. The U.S.S. Neve NCC-73838 fit the bill nicely, and it gave a nice surprise; the saucer section separates from the engineering section! How cool is that?
Now in comparison between the Enterprise D and the Neve, I have to say that to me at least the Neve engineering section looks far better than that of the Enterprise D. Where the Enterprise's version looks as though it needs something when the saucer section is separated, the Neve's looks as though it could serve as a stand alone star ship without the saucer section! I like how the design places the engineering section's bridge just below and behind that of the saucer section when they are joined, as you can clearly see in this image. Also you can actually see where that bridge is, while the Enterprise D version does not have a clearly defined location for its bridge.
Obviously, the Neve is from an earlier time than the Enterprise D, perhaps even before the Stargazer. The configuration shares similar design features with the Stargazer, but only very superficially. The point though is that to me, the Neve is the more awesome ship when compared to the Enterprise D. It even seems to have a much more positive connection between its two sections, lending more strength to the space-frames of both. And the close proximity of the two bridges to each other would allow for a very quick transference of personnel between them. In a battle situation, that would to me be of paramount importance, because the speed of such an operation would increase the chances of a successful outcome.
